Grown up in a bilingual setting!

Born and raised in Rhinau, a cross-border village along the River Rhine, I grew up in a fully bilingual environment, having got educated in French at school while speaking only alsatian, a German dialect, at home.

My childhood was highlighted by the numerous hours spent adventuring in the natural alluvial forests bordering the Rhine river and that stimulated my enthusiasm for natural history and outdoors, these keen interests having then also motivated my studies as well as my nature conservation volunteering work.

After having received my Master degree in Geography from the University of Strasbourg I was awarded a french-german studentship for post graduation studies at the Forestry Faculty of Freiburg where I passed my PhD degree. It goes without saying that such immersion in german university circles along with my commitment in local nature protection groups was ideal to perfect my command of the High-German language

Career choices and commitments to environmental protection across borders

My interest for nature protection went also hand in hand with my professional activities as a research scientist in the Chair for Landscape management of the University of Freiburg. This dedication to nature is also nurtured through my engagements as a co-founder of the Groupe de Recherche en Ecologie Arctique, a French non profit association devoted to ecological research in the arctic. Most of the projects related to these activities have in fact a transboundary or international component, both regarding research as well as management issues. These include active involvements in a host of bilateral projects and committees mainly related to the protection of the Rhine floodplain. Pioneering applications in the use of airborne laser scanning to assess landscape changes also expended the knowledge and related networks up to archaeological community on both sides of the River Rhine.

Especially my function as a project leader of a long term study on lemming cycles in Greenland enjoys an established track record of international partnership. The recognition received for the achievements of this project, including publications in prestigious journals as well as invitations as guest speaker in conferences would not have been possible without having consistently achieved English fluency.

A wealth of hands-on life-long experience with translations

Over the years countless commitments, both with academic project partners in France and Germany or as a volunteer to a host of transboundary environmental organizations provided me with a unique wealth of hands on life experience. This also allowed me to continue to develop my translator skills in many respects which in turn has increased the broader range of services that I can offer to my clients looking for support in such specialised translations requests. This experience includes also simultaneous translations in international environmental and forestry congresses as well as linguistic support in various transboundary projects. While this experience is mostly related to environmental issues in the Upper Rhine Valley, it goes without saying that many other solicitations from other sectors of our daylife
